Stump grinding

Why remove a tree stump?

After a tree has been felled, the stump left behind can cause more problems than most people expect. Stumps that sit in a garden, driveway or commercial site are not just unsightly. They present real, practical issues that tend to get worse over time rather than better.

Trip hazard. A stump sitting at ground level or just below is easy to miss, especially in longer grass. For families with young children, elderly relatives or anyone using the garden regularly, this is a genuine safety concern. On commercial sites, it becomes a liability issue.

Regrowth. Many species send up new shoots from the stump and root system after felling. Sycamore, willow and cherry are particularly persistent. Without grinding, you can end up with a cluster of weak stems growing back in the same spot, which is worse than the original tree.

Pests and decay. Rotting stumps attract insects, including wood-boring beetles, ants and wasps that sometimes nest in the decaying wood. In some cases, fungal infections from a rotting stump can spread to the roots of healthy trees nearby through underground contact.

Aesthetics and usability. A stump in the middle of a lawn, flower bed or patio area limits what you can do with the space. Removing it opens up the area for replanting, laying turf, extending a patio or simply having a clear, level garden.

How stump grinding works

Stump grinding uses a specialist machine fitted with a rotating cutting wheel that chips away at the wood, grinding the stump down to well below ground level. The grinder works methodically across the entire stump, reducing it to a mixture of wood chips and soil. This is a mechanical process, not chemical. There are no poisons or treatments involved.

We typically grind to a depth of 150mm to 300mm (6 to 12 inches) below ground level, depending on your plans for the area. If you want to lay turf or plant directly over the spot, deeper grinding gives a better result. For areas where the stump is simply in the way of mowing, a shallower grind is often enough.

After grinding, you are left with a pile of wood chips and mulch where the stump was. We can either clear these away completely, backfill the hole with topsoil, or leave the grindings for you to use as mulch around other plants. Most customers prefer a full clearance so the area is ready to use straight away.

Where we work

We grind stumps across a wide range of settings. In domestic gardens, the job is often a single stump left from a tree that was felled months or even years ago. On driveways and paths, stumps can interfere with paving, block drainage or simply look out of place. On commercial sites, farms and public land, we handle multiple stumps in a single visit.

Our equipment is compact enough to access tight spaces between fences, sheds and walls. If access is limited, we will assess the site before quoting and let you know exactly what is possible. In most residential gardens in Stirling, access is not a problem.

Stump grinding after tree felling

Stump grinding is often paired with tree felling. When we fell a tree, we can grind the stump on the same visit, saving you the cost and disruption of a separate appointment. If you already have a stump from a tree that was removed previously by another contractor, we are happy to grind that too.

Once the stump has been ground out, you can turf over the area, plant new trees or shrubs, extend a patio, or simply leave a level lawn. The area is stable and ready for use once backfilled. We cover Stirling, Falkirk, Dunblane, Bridge of Allan, Alloa, Callander and the surrounding areas of Central Scotland. View all of our arborist services.

Frequently asked

Common questions about stump grinding.

The cost depends on the size of the stump, how deep you need it ground and how accessible the site is. Small garden stumps are straightforward. Larger stumps or those in awkward positions take longer. We provide free, no-obligation quotes after a site visit so you know exactly what to expect.
We typically grind to between 150mm and 300mm (6 to 12 inches) below ground level. If you plan to lay turf or plant directly over the area, we grind deeper to give the new roots enough clean soil. For areas where you simply need the stump out of the way, a shallower grind is usually sufficient.
Yes. Our grinding equipment is compact enough to fit through standard garden gates and work in confined areas between fences, walls and sheds. We assess access during the free site visit and will let you know if there are any limitations before quoting.
Most single stumps in a domestic garden take between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on the diameter and species. Hardwoods like oak and beech take a little longer than softwoods. Multiple stumps on the same site are quicker per stump because the machine is already set up.
After grinding, you are left with a mixture of wood chips and soil. We can clear these away completely, backfill the hole with topsoil, or leave the grindings for you to use as garden mulch. Most customers choose a full clearance so the area is ready for use straight away.
